The interaction between the power take-off and the prime-mover of a wave energy device is absolutely fundamental to performance, reliability and survival. Edinburgh University has a long pedigree in research on direct-drive generators for wave energy. Two experienced researchers associated with Edinburgh University will share their experiences with direct-drive generators.
Talk 1: Modelling of direct-drive generators
Dr Richard Crozier, REOptimize Systems
Richard will discuss the design of direct drive generators for both wave and tidal energy, and demonstrate how a generator model is implemented in his open source wave-to-wire modelling tool.
Talk 2 : Design, fabrication, and integration of a direct-drive linear generator into the WEDGE Global WEC, for testing at PLOCAN.
Mr Miguel Santos Herran , University of Edinburgh
Miguel will share his practical experience of designing, building and launching a linear generator for sea trials. A 200kW prototype of the WEDGE Global WEC was tested offshore in the Canary Islands, Spain.
